Blaise Pascal (1623 - 1663), französischer Mathematiker, Theologe und Philosoph. Er galt als Wunderknabe auf dem Gebiet der Mathematik und erfand mit 19 Jahren eine Rechenmaschine, die als erste mechanische Addiermaschine gilt. Schon mit 16 Jahren hatte er den Pascalschen Satz aufgestellt, der besagte, dass in Flüssigkeiten der Druck gleichmäßig in alle Richtungen verteilt werde. Heute wird Pascal als Begründer der Wahrscheinlichkeitsrechnung und als einer der größten Mystiker in der Literatur des Christentums angesehen.
