Produktbeschreibung

Not since the late 1970s has a single work presented the biology of this heterogenous group of secondary alkaloids in such depth. Alkaloids, a unique treatise featuring leaders in the field, presents both the historical use of alkaloids and the latest discoveries in
  • the biochemistry of alkaloid production in plants
  • alkaloid ecology, including marine invertebrates, animal and plant parasites, and
  • alkaloids as antimicrobial and current medicinal use
. Highlights include chapters on the chemical ecology of alkaloids in host-predator interactions, and on the compartmentation of alkaloids synthesis, transport, and storage. Extensive cross-referencing in tabular format makes this volume an excellent reference.

Introduction to the Aims and Scope of the Book; M.F. Roberts, M. Wink. A Short History of Alkaloids; M. Wink. Alkaloids in Arrow Poisons; H. D. Neuwinger. Chemical Taxonomy of Alkaloids; P.G. Waterman. Enzymology of Alkaloid Biosynthesis; M.F. Roberts. Genes in Alkaloid Metabolism; K. Saito, I. Murakoshi. Production of Alkaloids in Plant Cell Culture; M.F. Roberts. The Biosynthesis of Alkaloids in Root Cultures; R.J. Robins. Induction of Alkaloid Biosynthesis and Accumulation in Plants and In Vitro Cultures in Response to Elicitation; U. Eilert. Compartmentation of Alkaloid Synthesis, Transport, and Storage; M. Wink, M.F. Roberts. Chemical Ecology of Akaloids; M. Wink. Modes of Action of Alkaloids; M. Wink. Plant Parasites; F.R. Stermitz. Allelopathy in Plants; J. Lovett, A.C.H. Hoult. Alkaloids in Animals; J.C. Breakman et al. Ecological Significance of Alkaloids from Marine Invertebrates; P. Proksch, R. Ebel. Antimicrobially Active Alkaloids; R. Verpoorte. Utilization of Alkaloids in Modern Medicine; T. Schmeller, M. Wink. Index.

Professor Michael Wink studied Biology in Bonn and Braunschweig, Germany. After post-doctoral work in Cologne and Munich he took up a professorship at the University of Mainz, Germany. Since 1989 Michael Wink is Professor of Pharmaceutical Biology at the University of Heideberg and was appointed Director of the Institute of Pharmacy and Molecular Biotechnology in 2002. His scientific interests focus on bioactive natural products, pharmacology & toxicology of natural products and molecular evolution. Professor Wink is author of numerous scientific papers and pharmaceutical biology books.
