Jean de La Fontaine (1621-1695) gilt als roi des vers (König der Verse). Seine Fabeln haben ihn nicht nur in Frankreich, sondern weltweit unsterblich gemacht. Die alten Meister zum Vorbild nehmend, ließ er sich vor allem von den Texten Äsops und Phädrus inspirieren und schuf seine ersten sechs Fabelbände 1668. Die weiteren sechs folgten in den Jahren 1678 und 1693. Während die ersten Bände der klassischen Fabeltradition verhaftet sind und sich durch eine pointierte Handlung mit einer moralischen Aussage auszeichnen, tritt bei den späteren Bänden die Zeitkritik stärker in den Vordergrund. 1683 wurde La Fontaine zum Mitglied der Academie Francaises . Paul Valéry nannte ihn den fabuliste par excellence .
