Hon. Francis Albert Rollo Russell (1849-1914), a meteorologist noted for his study of the worldwide effects of the 1883 volcanic explosion on the Indonesian island of Krakatoa, wrote Unitarian hymns with a scientific flavor. He served in the British foreign office until failing eyesight forced his resignation. He was a Darwinian who believed scientific determinism and free will compatible. His works include: London Fogs (1880), Epidemics, Plagues and Fevers: Their Causes and Prevention (1892), On Hail (1893), The Atmosphere in Relation to Human Life and Health (1896), Smoke in Relation to Fogs in London (1899), Psalms of the West (1899), Preventable Cancer: A Statistical Research (1912) and Early Correspondence of Lord John Russell, 1805-40 (1913).
