This study provides comprehensive information on cokemaking technologies in China, covering the entire cokemaking supply-chain, and including statistics and photos help to clarify the actual cokemaking practices. The text analyzes the problems faced by cokemaking managers and towns and villages, and provides detailed information directly from plants on clean cokemaking technologies.

The overall goal in this book is to explain key economic, environmental, technology, and transportation factors that are affecting the provincial and industrial energy intensities and environmental pollution in the People´s Republic of China (China). The author defines energy intensity as the energy consumption per unit of output. She concentrates on China, because it is the second largest energy user and pollution generator in the world. In this book, the focus is on the cokemaking sector in the Shanxi Province. Cokemaking is the largest consumer of coal in the region, using more than one-half of the coal consumed there.

Throughout the book, the author stresses the important role of the Shanxi Province in encouraging improvements in energy efficiency and pollution by (1) introducing new coke-oven technologies and (2) encouraging pollution-abatement measures for the older ovens. Economic, environmental, technology, transportation, and social aspects of cokemaking are discussed and the author examines how these factors are affecting the energy intensities and pollution in the Shanxi Province.

Since 1997, the AGS China cokemaking team has been examining the rapidly changing relationships among technology, energy, the environment, and health (TEEH) in one of China's most energy-intensive and highly polluting industries--cokemaking.  The team has developed analytical tools and methods that can be used to examine TEEH issues in almost any industry in any country. Their findings tell a fascinating story--a story that not only teaches us how we can begin to analyze unfamiliar industries through the TEEH lens, but also reveals the often unexpected consequences of industrial management and technology decisions.

Coke is unusual in that it is at the same time both particularly unglamorous and particularly important--as a result, key industrial changes occurring in China with far-reaching global economic and environmental impacts often go unnoticed. This book is a major step in closing the knowledge gap of those impacts. The editor supplements the detailed and informative text with photos illustrating the new and old technologies used in Shanxi Province from 1998 through 2004.
