Khair un Nissa Fatima, Mishal Mahmood and Mariam Azam are recent graduates of Pakistan Institute of Engineering and Applied Sciences (PIEAS). They are Electrical Power Engineers with interest in power systems and Smart Grids.
With the increasing energy demand, it has become necessary to employ small scale distributed generators to different power generation sources and merge the power in one stream. Distributed generation is widely being used so the theme of this book is to automate the existing manual synchronization of a Distributed Energy Resource (DER) to the Main grid. The document covers the details of synchronous generator synchronization i.e. needs, conditions, techniques, procedure, advantages, modelling and design options for synchronization. In the synchronization process, firstly frequency synchronization is automated via speed synchronization. For the implementation of design, LabVIEW software is used. In the next phase, Automatic Voltage Regulation (AVR) has been achieved using Arduino along with LabVIEW and an eight channel relay. Finally, protection schemes against over current, over frequency, under frequency and under voltage of the generator have been designed.
