covers a wide scope of films and filmmakers, but does not touch on the romantic fatalism of the genre that Dixon delves into when he discusses the works of Max Ophüls. Dixon's work brings into focus the techniques used by Ophüls (sweeping tracking shots, and often taking place in the past) that set his work apart.

exclusively critiques the dark comedy of Spanish films from Franco's reign to the 1990's, thereby omitting scores of films that emphasize dark humor, because they were not made by Spanish filmmakers. In contrast, Dixon addresses films and directors from various countries.
