His research focuses on visual communication and digital media. His book Visual Literacy: Image, Mind, and Reality was the recipient of the National Communication Association's Diamond Anniversary Book Award. His most recent publication is Digital Media: Transformations in Human Communication, 2nd Ed. (co-edited with Lee Humphreys).
